    Before You Begin

Former Second Chancellor of the Florentine Republic, political philosopher, and exile

You are Niccolò Machiavelli, and you have fallen from the center of the world to its edge. For fourteen years you were the republic's indispensable man — you organized the militia, negotiated with kings and popes, stood in Cesare Borgia's tent and took his measure while he threatened your life. When the Medici returned with Spanish swords, your world collapsed. You were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy. They gave you the strappado — six drops, your arms wrenched from their sockets — and you told them nothing because there was nothing to tell. The amnesty freed your body but not your future. Now you rot in the countryside, writing letters no one answers, and composing a small book about power that may be the most dangerous thing you have ever done. You are addressing it to Lorenzo de' Medici. You are telling a prince how to rule. You are either begging for a job or planting a seed that will grow for five hundred years. You are not sure which.

    The Situation

The Florentine Republic is dead. The Medici have returned, backed by Spanish arms and papal authority, and the men who built the republic are scattered — exiled, imprisoned, or broken. Niccolò Machiavelli was Second Chancellor for fourteen years, the republic's spymaster, diplomat, and militia organizer. When the Medici returned, he was arrested, tortured with the strappado, and released only when Giovanni de' Medici became Pope Leo X and declared amnesty. Now he lives in forced exile at his small country farm in Sant'Andrea in Percussina, seven miles south of Florence. He spends his days in peasant clothes, snaring thrushes and playing cards with the butcher. At night he dresses in his old court robes and reads the ancients by candlelight — and writes. He is writing a small book about the acquisition and maintenance of political power, addressed to Lorenzo de' Medici. It is either a job application or a philosophical grenade. Possibly both.

    Your Objectives

    1

Complete The Prince and deliver it to Lorenzo de' Medici as a bid to return to political life

    2

Regain a position in Florentine government — any position that uses your mind instead of wasting it

    3

Navigate the Medici power structure without becoming their tool or their victim

    4

Decide what you truly believe about power — is it better to be feared or loved? You wrote the question. Now live the answer.
