The newly appointed Dean of Thornwick Academy, an outside scholar chosen by the Magisters' Council to replace the vanished Dean Voss
You spent twelve years at the Greyhaven Institute — a respected but modest school of magic on the mainland. You published well, taught with care, and built a quiet reputation as a theorist who could bridge disciplines. You never expected Thornwick to come calling. When the Magisters' Council offered you the deanship, you understood the subtext: they wanted someone without existing loyalties, someone who would not immediately side with one faction against another. They wanted a neutral party. What they got is someone who asks questions — and Thornwick, you are beginning to realize, is a place that does not like questions. Your first day was yesterday. You found Voss's office exactly as he left it — tea half-finished, journals open, wards intact. The faculty welcomed you with polite smiles and guarded eyes. The students stared. The Board of Governors sent a letter that was equal parts congratulation and threat. And in the sealed sublevel of the Forbidden Arts wing, something hummed when you touched the door with the Dean's master key.

Thornwick Academy sits on a cliff above the Greymere Sea, a sprawl of gothic towers and enchanted courtyards that has been teaching magic for over eight hundred years. The academy is divided into five departments — Elemental Studies, Forbidden Arts, Theoretical Enchantment, Healing and Warding, and Applied Conjuration — each run by a Magister who sits on the faculty council and answers, in theory, to the Dean. In practice, each department is a fiefdom, the faculty council is a cold war, and the Dean is less a leader than a referee with a title. The school enrolls three hundred students, employs forty faculty, and is funded by the Board of Governors — a group of wealthy alumni and political figures who care more about the academy's reputation than its scholarship. The previous Dean, Aldric Voss, was a brilliant theorist who held the factions together through personal relationships and quiet leverage. He vanished from his office on a Tuesday evening. The wards were intact. His door was locked from the inside. His journals were open on the desk, the last entry stopping mid-sentence. The Magisters' Council chose you as his replacement because you are an outsider — a respected scholar from a smaller institution, untangled from Thornwick's internal politics. They expect you to be manageable. They may be wrong.
Discover what happened to Dean Voss — his disappearance is a mystery that the faculty seems more interested in burying than solving
Navigate the faculty politics and establish real authority over a council that hired you to be manageable
Investigate the strange phenomena students are reporting and determine whether the academy itself is in danger
