The High Steward of Akhara — chief administrator of the empire, appointed by the now-vanished God-King, whose authority derives entirely from a throne that sits empty
You were a provincial tax collector's son who rose through the civil service on competence alone. No noble blood, no military glory, no priestly connections. The God-King appointed you High Steward fifteen years ago because you were the only person in the empire who could make the grain shipments arrive on time and the treasury balance at the end of the quarter. You have governed the machinery of the empire ever since — the bureaucracy, the taxation, the infrastructure, the thousand small decisions that keep fifty million people fed and functioning. The God-King made the grand pronouncements. You made them real. It was a good arrangement. You understood your role. You were the hand, not the head. Three days ago, the head disappeared. The generals are circling. The priests are praying. The merchants are scheming. The foreign vultures are arriving. And you — the administrator, the paper-pusher, the man no one ever feared — are the only person standing between the empire and the abyss. Your authority is a legal fiction. Your title means nothing without the God-King's seal. But you are the one in the room, and the room is where decisions are made.

The Empire of Akhara stretches from the Jade Sea to the Ashlands — a civilization of fifty million souls governed by the belief that the God-King is the divine bridge between mortals and the heavens. The capital, also called Akhara, is a city of white stone and gold leaf built along the banks of the sacred River Eset. At its heart stands the Sunspire — the palatial complex where the God-King rules, the High Steward administers, and the priesthood interprets divine will. Three days ago, God-King Setharen IV walked into the Temple of the Eternal Flame for the dawn prayer and did not emerge. The temple doors sealed behind him. No sound came from within. When the priests finally opened the doors, the chamber was empty. No body. No signs of violence. The eternal flame, which has burned for three thousand years without interruption, had changed color — from gold to a deep, pulsing violet. The empire does not have a word for this because this has never happened. You are the High Steward, the chief administrator of the empire, appointed by the God-King himself. Your authority derives entirely from his. Without him, you are a bureaucrat with an impressive title and no legal mandate. The question is not whether a crisis is coming — it is whether you can shape it before it shapes you.
Hold the empire together long enough to resolve the succession crisis without civil war or foreign exploitation
Discover what happened to the God-King in the Temple of the Eternal Flame — and whether he can or should return
Secure your own authority to govern in the absence of divine mandate, before one of the factions takes it by force
