Scenario Briefing

    The Deep

Twelve thousand meters below the Pacific. Your submersible just found something that shouldn't exist. The surface isn't responding. And something down here knows you're looking.

    Before You Begin

Lead scientist on the Nereid deep-dive expedition, marine biologist specializing in hadal zone ecosystems and extremophile organisms

You are Dr. Maya Chen, Associate Professor of Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and you designed this expedition. Eighteen months ago, you were part of the team that analyzed the anomalous sonar returns from the Kermadec Ultra-Deep — geometric patterns at a depth that should not exist, in a formation that plate tectonics cannot explain. You wrote the grant proposal. You fought the review board. You convinced the Ashworth Foundation to fund a crewed dive when every autonomous vehicle they sent came back with corrupted data or did not come back at all. Three ROVs were lost in the trench over six months. Their telemetry cut out at approximately the same depth — 11,800 meters — each time. The foundation's scientific liaison, Dr. Elias Fen, was added to the crew at the last minute. You were told it was a condition of funding. You were not told why. You are now at 12,200 meters in a submersible rated for 12,500, descending toward the source of the anomaly with a crew of four people, forty-eight hours of life support, and a communications tether that stopped working forty-seven minutes ago. The structures on your sonar display are getting closer. They are not geological.

    The Situation

The Kermadec Ultra-Deep is a newly-discovered trench formation northeast of New Zealand, identified eighteen months ago by the deep-tow sonar array of the research vessel Pelagic Dream during a routine bathymetric survey. The formation extends to approximately 12,400 meters — deeper than the Mariana Trench's Challenger Deep by nearly 1,500 meters, which should be tectonically impossible in this region. The sonar returns from the deepest sections showed anomalous geometric regularity that the survey team initially attributed to instrument error. When the data was cleaned and re-processed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the geometric patterns persisted. The Ashworth Foundation — a private scientific foundation funded by tech wealth — offered to finance a crewed expedition on the condition that their scientific liaison, Dr. Elias Fen, was included in the dive crew. The research vessel Pelagic Dream is stationed at the surface, 12,400 meters above the submersible Nereid, connected by a communications tether that was functioning perfectly until forty-seven minutes ago.

    Your Objectives

    1

Document the anomalous structures and collect enough evidence to prove their existence to the scientific community above

    2

Maintain crew cohesion and get everyone back to the surface alive — discovery means nothing if the discoverers do not survive to report it

    3

Understand what happened to the communications tether and determine whether the surface vessel is still there
