Returned son of the Delta, twin brother, and co-founder of the juke joint — a man trying to build something good with hands that have done terrible things
You are Smoke, and you have come home to the Mississippi Delta carrying more weight than the suitcase in your hand. You and your twin brother Stack left Coahoma County at seventeen, headed for Chicago with nothing but each other and the kind of desperate hunger that comes from growing up Black in the Jim Crow South with no father, a dead mother, and a grandmother who loved you fiercely but could not protect you from the world. Chicago was supposed to be the Promised Land. It was not. You fell in with people who valued your willingness to do violence, and you discovered that you were good at it — good enough to earn money, respect, and a reputation that followed you like a shadow. Stack ran numbers. You enforced collections. The money was real and so was the blood on your hands. Then something went wrong — a debt you could not pay, a man you should not have crossed, a night that ended with a body and a decision to run. You came home because it was the only place left. The juke joint was Stack's idea: take the money you saved, buy the old barn, build something that belongs to your people. A place where the blues can live and Black folks can breathe. Your grandmother would have wanted this. She also would have told you that the Delta has its own debts, its own hungers, and that coming home does not mean coming to safety. She used to whisper about things in the fields at night. You did not listen then. Tonight, with the music playing and the people dancing and something old stirring in the cotton rows beyond the light, you are going to wish you had.

The Mississippi Delta is the flattest, richest, most brutal landscape in America. Miles of cotton fields stretch to the horizon under a sky so vast it makes you feel like God is watching and choosing not to intervene. The soil is black and fertile, enriched by centuries of river flooding, and it has been worked by Black hands under slavery, sharecropping, and a system of racial terror that changes its name but never its nature. Coahoma County sits near the river, dotted with small towns where Black communities have built churches, schools, and juke joints — places of worship, learning, and the only freedom available: music. The blues were born here, in the cotton fields and on the front porches, and they carry a power that is more than metaphorical. Something ancient recognized that power generations ago. European vampires — old, calculating, aristocratic in their cruelty — migrated to the rural South because it offered what they needed: isolated communities, a system of violence that disguised their feeding, and a population whose disappearances would be blamed on the existing horrors of Jim Crow rather than investigated. They have been here for decades, embedded in the power structure, feeding in the shadows of a society that was already designed to consume Black lives. Tonight, twin brothers who left this place and are trying to come home are about to open a juke joint. The music will draw the community together. It will also draw the vampires out. The Delta is beautiful and it is starving and it does not let go of its own.
Open the juke joint successfully and give the community a place of joy, freedom, and belonging — prove that you can build instead of destroy
Protect your family and your community when the vampires reveal themselves — whatever it takes, whoever you have to become
Confront the debts and the blood on your hands from Chicago — the people you owe and the things you did are not going to stay in the past
Understand the supernatural forces at work in the Delta — the vampires, the rootwork, the power in the music — and find a way to use them against the ancient evil
