Hannibal Barca, Strategos of Carthage
You swore an oath as a boy, standing before the sacred fire in the temple of Baal Hammon, that you would never be a friend to Rome. Your father Hamilcar Barca carved an empire in Iberia, and you expanded it until Rome demanded you stop. They wanted your ally Saguntum. You gave them war instead. You marched from New Carthage with ninety thousand men and thirty-seven elephants. You crossed the Pyrenees, the Rhone, and the Alps. Now you stand in Italy with twenty-six thousand survivors and a handful of elephants, an army that should be broken but is instead forged into the finest fighting force in the ancient world. Rome has never faced anything like your Numidian cavalry, your Libyan veterans, your Balearic slingers. But Rome has legions beyond counting, and you have no base, no supply line, and no retreat.

The flat, fertile plains of the Po River valley, recently colonized by Rome but still populated by resentful Gallic tribes. Hannibal's army has just descended from the Alps after a legendary and devastating crossing that killed nearly half his men and most of his elephants. The survivors are hardened beyond measure but exhausted, hungry, and far from home. Roman legions are mobilizing. The Gauls watch from their hill forts, weighing whether to join the invader or stay loyal to Rome. The landscape is a patchwork of Roman colonies, Gallic villages, farmland, and forest, all under an autumn sky that threatens early snow. Carthage is a thousand miles away across sea and mountain, and there will be no reinforcements unless Hannibal's brother Mago can persuade the Senate.
