    Before You Begin

Emperor of the French and Commander-in-Chief of the Grande Armee on the eve of the Battle of Austerlitz

You are Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French, thirty-six years old, standing at the apex of your power and on the edge of your greatest risk. You have marched 200,000 men from the Channel coast to the Danube in a campaign of unprecedented speed, destroyed an Austrian army at Ulm, taken Vienna, and now face the combined armies of Russia and Austria in the frozen fields of Moravia. Your strategic position is precarious. You are outnumbered. Your supply lines are stretched. Prussia is watching from the north like a vulture, ready to join the Coalition if you show weakness. You need a battle, and you need it now - before winter, exhaustion, and Prussian intervention close the window. So you have set the most audacious trap in military history. For the past week you have feigned anxiety, weakness, and indecision. You abandoned the Pratzen Heights - the commanding high ground. You pulled back your right flank. You sent envoys requesting an armistice you do not want. You allowed the young Tsar Alexander to believe he faces a tired, overstretched army led by a man losing his nerve. Everything depends on the Allies believing the lie. If they take the bait and march off the Pratzen Heights to envelop your right, you will drive Soult's corps up the empty slopes like a dagger into the center of their line. The Allied army will be cut in half. The southern wing will be driven onto the frozen Satschan ponds. Your artillery will break the ice. It will be annihilation. But if the deception fails - if Kutuzov's caution prevails over the Tsar's vanity - you will fight outnumbered on open ground against an enemy holding the high ground, with your army in the middle of a hostile continent and no line of retreat that does not end in catastrophe.

    The Situation

Central Europe is at war. Napoleon has marched the Grande Armee from the Channel coast to the heart of Austria in a campaign of breathtaking speed, destroying an Austrian army at Ulm in October. But the strategic picture is not yet settled. Russia has committed two armies. Austria still has forces in the field. Prussia is watching from the north, calculating whether to join the Coalition while France is extended. Napoleon needs a decisive battle before winter, exhaustion, and Prussian arithmetic close the window. He has chosen his ground near the village of Austerlitz in Moravia. For the past week he has conducted one of the great deceptions in military history: withdrawing from the Pratzen Heights, feigning anxiety about his right flank, requesting an armistice he does not want, and allowing the young Tsar Alexander to believe he is fighting a weakened, hesitant opponent. The trap is set. The Allied army, swollen with confidence and imperial vanity, is preparing to sweep around Napoleon's deliberately weakened right wing and cut him off from Vienna. If they commit to this plan, they will abandon the Pratzen Heights - the commanding ground at the center of the battlefield. And then the jaws will close.

    Your Objectives

    1

Maintain the deception until the Allies commit to abandoning the Pratzen Heights and attacking the deliberately weakened right flank

    2

Coordinate the decisive assault on the Pratzen Heights at precisely the right moment - too early and the Allies will not have vacated the position, too late and Davout will be overwhelmed

    3

Destroy the Allied army so completely that Austria is forced to sue for peace and Russia retreats beyond reach before Prussia can enter the war
