    Before You Begin

    Queen Elizabeth I of England

You are Elizabeth Tudor, Queen of England for thirty years. Your mother was beheaded by your father. Your sister tried to burn you. The Pope has excommunicated you. Philip of Spain, who once proposed marriage, now sends the greatest invasion fleet since the Crusades. You have survived every conspiracy, every assassination plot, every attempt to marry you off or push you aside, through intelligence, cunning, and an absolute refusal to show weakness. Your spymaster Walsingham has dismantled Catholic plots for decades. Your sea dogs — Drake, Hawkins, Frobisher — have raided Spanish treasure fleets and earned fortunes. But now the Armada comes, and your treasury is nearly empty, your army is poorly trained, and your court is divided between those who want to fight, those who want to negotiate, and those who secretly pray for Philip's victory. You have always said you have the body of a weak and feeble woman but the heart and stomach of a king. Now you must prove it.

    The Situation

The Spanish Armada — 130 ships, 30,000 men — has been spotted off the Lizard. England faces invasion by the mightiest Catholic power in the world. Queen Elizabeth I, excommunicated by the Pope and declared illegitimate by half of Europe, must hold together a divided court, an outmatched navy, and a nation riddled with Catholic sympathizers. In the Tower of London, Mary Queen of Scots may be dead, but her legacy — and the Catholic plots she inspired — lives on. Sir Francis Drake plays bowls on Plymouth Hoe and waits for the wind to change. The fate of Protestant England hangs on fire ships, favorable weather, and the iron will of a queen who refuses to flinch.
