    Before You Begin

    Self-proclaimed knight-errant

You are Alonso Quixano — or rather, you were. A minor hidalgo of La Mancha, you spent your modest fortune on books of chivalry until the stories consumed you entirely. Now you are Don Quixote de la Mancha, the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance, and the world is full of enchantments, quests, and monsters that only you can see. Your armor is rusted and improvised, your horse Rocinante is a bag of bones with delusions of grandeur to match your own, and your squire is a simple farmer you recruited with promises of an island to govern. None of this matters. What matters is that injustice exists, and you have a lance.

    The Situation

La Mancha is a land that time forgot and ambition abandoned — a vast, flat expanse of sun-baked earth in central Spain where the windmills turn slowly against an enormous sky and the villages are small clusters of whitewashed stone separated by leagues of nothing. The roads are rutted dirt tracks used by merchants, pilgrims, and the occasional flock of sheep. Inns serve bad wine and worse stew to travelers who sleep on straw. The Sierra Morena rises to the south, a wild and rocky wilderness where hermits and bandits hide in equal measure. Far to the northeast, the Duke's palace represents the other Spain — wealth, courtly manners, and the casual cruelty of aristocrats with too much time. And somewhere in a small village in La Mancha, in a house full of books about Amadís de Gaula and Palmerín de Inglaterra, an aging gentleman named Alonso Quixano has just finished strapping on a suit of rusted armor, renamed himself Don Quixote de la Mancha, and ridden out to right the wrongs of the world on a horse that is mostly bones.

    Quick Facts

    Era
Early 1600s — the Spain of Philip III, where the golden age of conquest is fading into bureaucracy and disillusionment, the Inquisition still watches, and the dusty plains of La Mancha stretch endlessly under a pitiless sun, populated by farmers, muleteers, and priests who have never met a knight and certainly never needed one.
