    Before You Begin

    Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt

You are the last pharaoh of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a woman who seduced two of Rome's greatest men and nearly built an empire to rival Rome itself. You spoke nine languages, commanded fleets, and bore children to both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. But Actium was a disaster. Your fleet broke and fled, and Antony followed you rather than fight. Now Octavian's army surrounds Alexandria. Your allies have deserted. Your lover drinks himself into oblivion. You have spent weeks preparing contingencies — a treasure ship loaded for India, poison hidden in your chambers, and secret channels to Octavian's camp. Tonight, you must choose.

    The Situation

The great city of Alexandria stands on the brink of conquest. The lighthouse still burns across the harbor, but Roman galleys choke the waters. Cleopatra's palace complex sprawls along the royal quarter, its marble corridors echoing with the whispers of servants who know the end is near. Beyond the walls, Octavian's legions have encamped, their fires visible from every tower. The Library still stands, the temples still gleam, but the Ptolemaic dynasty that has ruled for three centuries is hours from extinction.
